As we age the cartilage naturally erodes. Those afflicted with osteoarthritis, though, will eventually have no cartilage left. Once this occurs, the bones rub against each other causing painful bone spurs to form.

Overuse is a common problem among younger people. Tendonitis is usually caused by repetitive motion activities. A common form of tendonitis is called carpal tunnel syndrome which affects the wrists and forearms. Ligaments are the fibrous tissue that holds bones together. Ligaments can be damaged in two ways. A strain occurs when the ligament is stretched too far or used too much. Tiny tears occur in the fibers of the ligament which cause the tissue to swell. Sprains are the result of the joint being bent in an unnatural direction.

Osteoarthritis is not the only illness that affects joint health. An autoimmune disease called rheumatoid arthritis causes swelling in the joints for unknown causes. A bacterial infection can cause septic arthritis. Many other forms of arthritis also exist.

Base Training Why Should You Choose?

A cyclist starts the base phase before he performs the stress training. Base training is the foundation of his whole training program which helps him to compete in races. His planning and monitoring go a long way in the success of base phase. He can plan the volume of his workout and the time to be spent on riding. During this training, he perfects good riding position. A total time of 8 to 12 weeks is allotted by the cyclist to improve his riding technique and form. He develops efficiency during this period. His intensity is not increased during the base phase because it results in overwork and injury. His muscle groups get used to the stress that is generated. Low intensity stress applied during the base phase prevents injury.

A beginner in cycling should buy his new bicycle before the base phase starts and adjust the position of the handle bar and saddle height to suit his posture. All variations in posture form and riding on bumpy roads should be tried during the base phase only since the volume of riding is high and sufficient time is allotted for good training.

In the beginning, the cyclist should ride for lesser distances during the first two weeks. His fitness level decides the distance he covers. He should have in mind the goal distance to be covered in the final phase of this training. From this figures, he can chart out steady increments in the volume of riding for the successive weeks. For example, if a cyclist decides to start his training with 200 kilometers in the first week and end with 500 kilometers in the final week, he can plan such that he covers 300, 250, 300, 375, 400, 350, 400, 450, 475 and 425 kilometers in the middle ten weeks of his base training. A combination of increase and slight decrease in the distances makes his legs grow stronger. By alternating recovery period and stress period, his stamina grows to a large extent. He allows rest days when the body becomes more fit. While beginners cover smaller distances as the goal, they can ride for 4 days a week, elite cyclists can leave one day for rest and ride longer distances as the volume goal during the others days in the week.

Base training has to be supplemented with cross training like running, strain training and swimming. These training schedules increase his aerobic capacity and endurance.

The 136 questions that were given to the participants, specific questions were asked on how they cooked their foods, what types of oils they used, and dietary products they used.

The participants were then notified every two years by a questionnaire that asked each about their diet, lifestyle, and other medical conditions. From this information, researchers were able to pick up new cases of diabetes

During the follow-up period (median 4.4 years) the researchers from the University of Navarra found that participants who stuck closely to the diet had a lower risk of diabetes. A high adherence to the diet was associated with an 83% relative reduction in the risk of developing diabetes.

Interestingly, those participants who stuck strictly to the diet were expected to have the highest prevalence of risk factors for diabetes such as they got older with age, a family history of diabetes, and a higher proportion of ex-smokers.

This was not the case. In fact, they had a lower risk of diabetes, suggesting that the diet might provide substantial protection.

The diet include a high intake of fiber and vegetable fat, a low intake of trans fatty acids, and a moderate intake of alcohol.

In addition, a key element of the diet is the abundant use of virgin oil for cooking, frying, spreading on bread, and dressing salads.

The researchers concluded by calling for larger members and trials to confirm their findings.

Ten Must Have Hiking Ingredients

These are the most important items in your pack. Applicable to both dayhikes and backpacking trips, these will improve your safety, comfort and quality of your outdoor adventure.

First recommendation is to obtain a map of the area that you will be hiking. You don't want to become lost, so pick up a map at the visitor center, ranger station or download one at www.usgs.gov. If you suffer an injury, you can use the map to aid rescuers in locating you.

Purchase a map reading compass and learn how to use it. Once you've learned how to orient the park map and the compass, you will know what direction you are facing, how to easily correct your course and get back on track.

Two, one liter bottles of water so that you stay hydrated. This is your minimum required intake per day, but since hiking is physically demanding you will drink more, especially in warmer climates. You can survive for a month without food, but only two or three days without water. You should have some sort of water treatment with you. I carry Aqua-Mira, which is a liquid purifying agent.

It's possible to spend an unexpected night in the woods. Always have some extra food, enough for an additional day if you need it. Even having a few back up whole food bars with you should do the trick. Especially if they constitute meal replacement. You will have the extra energy with you just in case.

A few more layers of clothing for comfort and safety. Temperatures can drop unexpectedly or at nightfall. If you hike through rain or fall into a creek, having only one layer of wet clothes when it starts getting colder can spell disaster. Make sure to wear synthetics as they are more insulative when wet and dry quickly.

Pack some sort of light source like a headlamp or flashlight. If you are forced to make camp or hike out in the dark, you will be able to see trail debris an obstacles that could cause danger.

Having an accident or injury in the backcountry is no fun. Bring a small first aid kit with you. You can create one out of household supplies but don't forget hiking needs like moleskin or blister treatment. I recommend taking a basic wilderness medicine course.

On rare occasion one must light a fire in the backcountry as a matter of survival. I've been on a kayak trip where someone overturned and they were soaked just as the temperature started to drop. Do not light a fire unless absolutely necessary. Bring matches and a lighter in a waterproof case and use caution to avoid wildfires.

A small camping knife may come in handy for a number of purposes. Make sure that the one you use has a locking blade, you don't want it to close on a finger.

Ultraviolet protection is really important. The suns rays can be damaging to eyes and skin, so bring a good pair of sunglasses, a small tube of sunblock and perhaps a wide brimmed hat.

A recent study done by USDA scientist found that artichokes, beans, and acai berry were among the best foods to find the highest levels of the disease fighting compound known as antioxidants.

It was also confirmed that already well-known high antioxidant foods such as cranberries and blueberries--the researchers also found that Russet potatoes, pecans and even cinnamon are all excellent--although lesser-known, sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants are thought to fight cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer's.

"The bottom line is the same: eat more fruits and veggies," says Ronald L. Prior, Ph.D., a chemist and nutritionist with the USDA's Arkansas Children's Nutrition Center in Little Rock, Ark., and lead author of the study. "This study confirms that those foods are full of benefits, particularly those with higher levels of antioxidants. Nuts and spices are also good sources."

The new study is more complete more accurate than previous USDA antioxidant data and includes more foods than the previous study as high tech equipment was used by the researchers. They analyzed antioxidant levels in over 100 different foods, including fruits and vegetables--the new study also includes data on spices and nuts for the first time.

The foods were analyzed and measured for the concentration levels of antioxidants and the capacity per serving of the antioxidants. Research showed the top fruits were the acai berry, cranberries, blueberries, and black berries. The highest levels found in the nut category were walnuts, hazelnuts, and pecans--Russet potatoes, beans, and artichokes were found to have the highest level antioxidant concentration in the vegetable category.

Basketball Drills and Advice for Defense

Everyone has heard the "Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships," but is it true? Of course it is true, because to win you need to play defense. You do not know from night to night if your shot is going to go in, but you defense will always be there. That just takes hard work and practice.

So why is it that you never see kids practicing their defensive drills in their driveway? Because they are either too flashy or do not know any. These individual defensive drills will make you the player your coach puts in to shut down the other teams stud.

Drills to build quickness:

Lines-Jump side to side and back and forth over the half court line or any line with one foot at a time and then both feet at a time. Go as fast as you can. You want little quick jumps.

.Dots- In this drills, make 5 dots. Have 4 in a square and 1 in the middle so that they will look like an x. Do every combo jumping dot to dot on them. Do this with each foot or both feet.

Bounding- This drill trains you to bound on defense and not just run everywhere. Start this drill out on one foot and then jump as far as you can in a random direction an another direction landing on your other foot. Keep on doing this, but only do it for a short period of time. You are wanting to train your muscles to be explosive so go hard for a short amount of time.

Game Situations

Shuffle- Use the push slide step technique, and never overlap your feet. The push slid step technique is push with one leg, then slide the other one next to it, and then step back to where you started. It is that simple. To do this, go from the end of the lane to the other while staying in your defensive stance. Your defensive stance is having one hand inches from the ground and one hand up in someone face. The one hand up is to be distracting the player ready to block his shot or get a hand in the face while the low hand is being pesky and is the hand preventing the crossover ready to steal the ball and therefore making the playing you are guarding to go the direction you want him to go while making him uncomfortable.

Closing Out- Start out of bounds and put a cone at the free throw line. Imagine the cone as an imaginary person. Run at it and then chop step when you get close with your but down and hands up being ready for the shot and drive. Practice like it is a real game, or you will get burned in a real game.

Ball Shuffle Drill- Pass the ball along the wall while shuffleing. Always stay in your defensive stance while doing this. Remember that for all the defensive drills and you will get a great workout.

Greasy hair can look oily and dull, and have a lank and lifeless appearance. It can look flat and heavy, and it never seems to stay clean and fresh. It takes on a stringy appearance within a few hours of shampooing and refuses to stay full and fluffy. Does this describe your hair? Do you ask the question, why is my hair greasy? Greasy hair can cause social embarrassment as others may judge that the sufferer has poor hygiene and does not wash their hair frequently enough, even if they actually wash it every day.

Grease found in greasy hair is natural body oil called sebum. Sebum is produced by the sebaceous gland. Each hair has a sebaceous gland immediately under the skin. Greasy hair is healthy hair as the oil (sebum) is produced to stop each hair strand from drying and to stop the ends splitting. Sebum is produced by the body to lubricate hair and skin and prevents drying by providing a protective barrier. Sebum is your own built-in moisturizer for the body.

Greasy hair is excess of sebum in the hair and comes as a result of an over production of sebum (oil) from over active sebaceous glands, stimulated by hormones called androgens. A diet that is low in vitamin B can also be a cause of greasy hair, along with the hormones often found in the meat of Western diets which can add to unbalanced hormones.

The key of how to avoid, stop, treat and cure greasy hair is approach it from the outside and inside. Starting with the outside: avoid brushing your hair too often, and avoid brushing your hair vigorously. A Martial Arts class is a place where you learn to be healthy and strong and fit. It is filled with dedicated, hard working, serious and intent people. The five following items are things that you don't want to hear in any good and serious martial arts class.

Hearing any of these things slows the class down, breaks the pacing. Hearing any of these things reveals a weakness that should not be revealed, but rather squashed. Hearing any of these things destroys the rite of passage that a martial arts class is.

Number five amongst the not to be said items in a good and serious martial arts class is...that hurts. Hey, a little pain is going to happen here and there, but grunt and grit and get over it. If you need medical attention, crawl off the mat, find a telephone and call an ambulance!

Number four amongst the not to be saids in a martial arts class is...I wasn't ready. Good friggin' Lard...being ready is what the class is about! Open your eyes and ears and get with the program!

Number three amongst the not to be saids in a martial arts class is...I'm sorry. You're supposed to be learning how to dish out pain! If you handed out too much pain, then watch him or her crawl off the mat, or, better yet, roll them off the mat, and get back to business!

Number two amongst the not to be said items in a good and serious martial arts class is...what if the guy does something else, like Oh, ow and slap my ears so hard I grow cauliflowers I can't believe you said that! If he does something else, then you do something else...and, in the meantime...get with the drill or you won't be able to handle the first thing he did!

Number one amongst the things you don't ever want to hear in a good and serious martial arts class is...me asking you why you were late! Get ready you good for nothing excuse for a turkey butt, because when I get done doing to you what I'm going to do to you you're not going to be ready or able to crawl from what is about to hurt so bad somebody is going to have to roll you off the mat so the serious martial artists can get on with the show! I really and truly mean it, too!

The point of this is...always be ready, be careful with your matmates and try not to injure them or yourself, don't interrupt or slow the flow of the class, and be on time. Sure, we had some humor here, and there should be humor when you're learning to maim and dismember your fellow man. But...treat the art as sacred, and you will become as sacred.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Pain Can Be eased

Carpal tunnel syndrome is just one of the many conditions that adults suffer. And just like any other health problems, it brings in pain and discomfort. With that, it is important to immediately go to your doctor and get and examination upon experiencing its symptoms. This way, your doctor can give you a confirmation on whether you are actually suffering carpal tunnel syndrome or just another similar condition.

Carpal tunnel is described to be the small tunnel of ligaments and bone is located at the base of your hand. A group of blood vessels, ligaments and median nerve passes through this tunnel. Whenever the tunnel is compressed because of swelling or pressure, the function of the many nerves located in the carpal tunnel is affected. This results to a sensation usually felt by the thumb, the first two fingers of the hand and half of the ring finger.

People whose median nerve is affected may feel numbness or tingling in their thumb or the first few fingers of one or both hands. This may just be mildly annoying. You may also notice numbness or tingling in the palm of your hand. Sometimes the pain can extend up your arm to the elbow.

Carpal tunnel syndrome also brings pain on the wrist of one of both hands. The pain along with the constricted nerves will then cause difficulties with finger coordination, making it difficult to pick up things. The condition makes it difficult to perform intricate finger movement.

Long suffered symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may lead to weakened hand grip. In this light, a patient may lose control of his grip, causing him to accidentally drop whatever item he holds. Eventually, without any form of treatment, the condition can immobilize the muscles at the base of the thumb.

When you go in for an exam, your doctor will test you for numbness in your palm and on your fingers. He will see if you have lost any strength in your grip. They will perform a range of motion test to see if it has been affected.

As you go to your doctor, two tests are typically performed to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome. In the first test, the doctor will position the elbows of the patient at his shoulder level and flex the back of the hands and the wrist to form a 90-degree angle. If the patient already suffers carpal tunnel syndrome, this position should reproduce its symptoms.

The second test is called the Tinel's sign. To perform this test, the doctor will hold the patient's wrist and point the hand downward. At that position, the doctor will tap on the wrist near the palm. If the patient has carpal tunnel syndrome, he will feel tingling sensations on his fingers or thumb.

Once your doctor has confirmed your symptoms and given you a diagnosis, he will outline a treatment plan for you. Be sure and follow his instructions as much as possible to get results and reduce your pain. If you catch this condition early enough, you should be able to avoid surgery. Broccoflower is a cross between broccoli and cauliflower, and more like cauliflower than broccoli. Broccoli raab is intensely flavorful, with a pleasant slightly bitter taste. It has more leaves and a longer stem than common green broccoli, and though its stem is tender enough and needs no peeling, the bottom last inch or two should be discarded as it is wood-like and tough. Broccoli raab is otherwise similar enough to regular broccoli to serve as a substitute for the latter in most recipes. Finally, broccoli sprouts are just sprouts from broccoli seeds, and have become popular for their high concentrations of healthy phytonutrients.

The Risk Factors for Ischemic Heart Disease

Ischemic heart disease is defined as decreased blood flow to the heart due to narrowed coronary arteries. The obstruction results from cholesterol deposits sticking to the artery wall interrupting the flow of blood to the heart. The deposits harden causing hardening of the arteries. This is called atherosclerosis, which is a medical term sometimes interchanged with arteriosclerosis. Both have the same affect, whereby both impede blood flow to the heart.

Plaque buildup or arteriosclerosis is one common factor in the onset of Ischemic Heart Disease. High cholesterol and triglyceride levels are the cause for the plaque which in turn results in the blockage of blood vessels which feed the heart. As a result, blockage to the heart occurs which then leads to heart attack symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath and irregular heart beat. However, some patients may not even feel these symptoms as heart disease can also damage the nerves surrounding the heart.

As time passes, plaque deposits narrow the arteries causing inefficient blood flow, which can also lead to the development of a type of Ischemic heart disease called angina. Angina Pectoris, or strangling, is chest pain caused by lack of oxygen to the heart due to poor blood supply. This puts the patient at an extremely high risk for heart attack and cardiac arrhythmia.

Patients at risk for Ischemic heart disease are those with diabetes, family history of heart disease or have high blood pressure. Most often, these risk factors can either be lessened or eliminated completely with simple changes to lifestyle such as losing weight and quitting smoking. These changes are beneficial no matter the situation; however it is important to note that they will not cure someone who already has ischemic heart disease. In addition, anyone who has already undergone a heart attack will most likely experience another one within five years. Visiting a healthcare provider on a regular basis will allow them to monitor its progression as well as alleviate or eliminate any future problems from occurring.

There is good news regarding ischemic heart disease. It is able to be prevented or its severity lessened with proper healthcare and lifestyle changes. Shiitake Extract Used in Asia as Cancer Medication

In Europe and America, "mushrooms" in a recipe usually refers to button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus), which were first cultivated in France in the 1600's. In Far East Asia, the equivalent is Shiitake, which has long been the cultivated "food mushroom" of choice. Only in the past few decades has Shiitake become a household name in western cuisine.

Also known as Chinese Mushroom or Black Mushroom, wild Shiitake is strictly an Asian species. It derives its name from one of its hosts, the Shii Tree, but can also be found growing on Asian oaks and beeches. Cultivating Shiitake is a tradition that stretches back approximately 1000 years in China.

What is less known in the West is that in the form of Shiitake extract, this is also the most studied medicinal mushroom of the Orient. The primary focus of research has been on the anti-viral [93] and anti-tumoral [94] properties.

The preferred part of Shiitake to use medicinally is the mycelium (the "roots") because they contain compounds that either don't exist in the fruit body ("mushroom"), or are much more concentrated in the mycelium.

The most researched Shiitake extract is known as LEM, short for Lentinula Edodes Mycelia. (Shiitake's Latin name is Lentinula edodes.) Research has found LEM to enhance the immune system, [95, 96, 97] especially against bacterial infection. [98, 99] It's also been reported to be anti-tumoral. [100] A 2005 study published findings that it killed melanoma cells while sparing non-diseased tissue. [101]

A famous polysaccharide isolated from Shiitake is known as Lentinan, deriving its name from Lentinula. Lentinan has been shown to stimulate the natural cancer fighting mechanisms of the human immune system [102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110] and is used in Asia as a cancer-drug, administered intravenously.

Arabinoxylanes of Shiitake extract derived from rice cultivated mycelium have been shown to have powerful anti-viral properties. [111, 112, 113]

Specifically herpes simplex virus type 1 [114] and more importantly HIV have responded to Shiitake extracts in several studies. [115, 116, 117] However, the previously mentioned Lentinan polysaccharide, by itself, has no significant effect on the replication of HIV. [25]

Additional studies have reported positive results with Shiitake extract in conditions of chronic fatigue syndrome [119] and Candida [118], as well as for septic shock prevention. [120]

And last but not least, in his book Mycelium Running, foremost U.S. medicinal mushroom expert Paul Stamets also lists the following areas where Shiitake has been reported as having a therapeutic effect: Blood sugar; blood pressure; kidney support; cholesterol; liver health; stress; sexual dysfunction; breast cancer; prostate cancer; liver cancer. Sleep Apnea and Gaining Weight

Is a lack of sleep thwarting your best weight loss efforts? There is much evidence to suggest that a lack of sleep goes hand-in-hand with weight gain. But first, it is important to address why you are not sleeping well. Is your stress level or caffeine intake to blame? Or is your sleeplessness due to a common but very serious condition called sleep apnea? Sleep apnea can affect weight loss, hunger and hormone activity in a number of ways, thwarting your best efforts to maintain a healthy weight.

Simply put, sleep apnea happens when breathing is obstructed or ceases altogether while sleeping. Symptoms of the condition range from light snoring to waking up several times during the night, gasping for air. The most common form of sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, affects approximately six percent of the population. But this number is expected to rise along with the increasing rate of obesity, because obesity is a chief cause of obstructive sleep apnea.

To make matters worse, those who are already overweight may gain weight more easily if they arent getting adequate sleep, fueling a vicious cycle. Several theories attempt to explain why a lack of sleep may encourage us to pack on the pounds. Some say that a sleep-deprived person simply doesnt have the energy to be active during the day. They are too tired to get to the gym or even take the stairs, burning far fewer calories than a well-rested individual would. Others believe the sleep-deprived attempt to make up for a lack of energy by consuming a greater number of calories. Additional evidence surrounding sleep deprivation and weight gain suggests the problem may be hormonal.

Hormone function is largely responsible for the way in which fat cells respond to the food we eat. Cortisol is a hormone that is usually released in response to emotional and physical stress. When we dont get enough sleep, cortisol is released at an increased rate, making us feel hungry even if we have eaten enough.

And just because sleep apnea is most common among adults, do not assume that children are exempt from the problem. Its no secret that the number of obese children is rising steadily; and its no stretch to imagine that some of these children will develop sleep apnea.

If you are having trouble sleeping on a regular basis, you may be suffering from sleep apnea. Otherwise, a few simple tips and tricks just might help get you back on a regular sleep schedule. If you are already obese and suffering from sleep apnea, your chiropractor can discuss a sensible dieting plan with you, helping you return to a healthy weight and enjoy more restful, unobstructed sleep. And of course, never underestimate the importance of exercise. Exercising three to four times per week is crucial for restful sleep. And getting your workout in long before bedtime is helpful, leaving ample time for your heart rate and hormone levels to return to a resting state. Make sure your room is dark and the temperature of the room will remain comfortable throughout the night. If youre one of those people trying to squeeze extra tasks and activities into your day, leave more for tomorrow and get some sleep. Adequate sleep will increase your productivity during waking hours.

How to Fish

So, you think you want to learn a new hobby and it's going to be fishing. There are several methods of finding out how to fish, the hardest way being trial and error, however, the best way is to find an instructor for one-on-one instruction.

1. Get seasickness medication: If you're going to fish on the water, nothing is worse than having your fishing trip ruined by seasickness. Most seasickness medication is appropriate (e.g. Bonine). Even seasoned fishermen take some on rough-weather days. Take one tablet before you go to sleep, another when you wake up and a third one before you go on deck.

2. Get a decent reference book: There are a lot of very good books available at your local bookstores and online. The book should give you instructions as well as the terminology and definitions. There are some things you may not immediately understand but that you have to know anyway. One good thing is to learn how to tie different kinds of knots. This useful knowledge will also be invaluable for other reasons throughout your whole life.

3. Get on a party boat: There are party boats that carry from five to as many as sixty anglers. The boat will usually provide you with everything you need from bait, lures, rod, reel, sinkers to hooks. They will show you how to fish and even take the fish off the hook for you as well. You will make plenty of new fishing pals on board and they will help and advise you. Party boats will generally cost between $25 - $70 a day per person and the fish you catch are yours to eat. A party boat is a bargain for novices.

4. Pick your pier: After you have already learned the skills to use a rod and reel, you need to look for a fishing pier. The majority of seaside cities have a public pier or pay-to-fish pier. You can rent tackle and buy bait on these piers. If you do have problems, there are many pier anglers around to help and give you tips.

5. To do party or pier?: You should do either method three or four times each or both at the same time at this point. The best thing to do is to practise them both ways a few times to really learn how to do each method.

6. The reel deal: The conventional reel is probably what you've been using up to this point. The conventional reel is designed to take loads of wear and tear. However, maybe you now ought to consider other types or / and makes of reels. Ideally you have already met other fishermen and perhaps made a friend or two who can assist you in choosing a reel. You could even ask a fishing equipment shop owner for tips.

First off, you need to learn the mechanics of the reel and the other equipment. Learning to cast, tie knots and bait is not that complicated. Secondly, you need to learn where to fish. Successful fishermen know where the fish are schooling. Fish move from place to place and knowledgeable fishermen know these patterns and are able to work out where the fish are schooling.
