Now energy drinks can really seduce you. After all, all you have to do is open a can, drink some liquid and you get instant energy.

1. Worsened digestion. Caffeine, the main ingredient in energy drinks, can wreak havoc on your digestive system. When taking in excess, it can compromise your digestive lining.

2. Sleep debt masking. Just because the caffeine in the energy drink keeps you awake and alert, doesn't mean that you've reduced your sleep debt. And a massive sleep debt will make getting rid of arm flab that much harder. Good Health And The Omega3 Omega 6 Ratio.

Perhaps you're already aware of the health benefits of essential fatty acids, and in particular Omega 3 fatty acids. There's been plenty of news lately about these health benefits and many people now understand about the importance of maintaining an adequate intake of Omega3 fats, in which most of us are deficient. But have you heard about Omega 6 fats, and do you know what the Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio is?

Essential fatty acids are important for good health. We cannot manufacture these in our body and so we rely on a daily intake of these in our diet. Omega 3 fats are primarily found in fish and research has shown that most of us are deficient in Omega 3 in our diets.

Omega 6 fatty acids, on the other hand, are found in only plant based sources. They are found in vegetable oils like peanut oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil and corn oil are high in Omega 6 and soy oil is almost totally comprised of Omega 6 fat.

Because many of these vegetable oils are very cheap they are used extensively in processed foods, particularly in margarine, for this reason our intake of Omega 6 fats, though important for our diet in limited amounts, is excessive.

Research has shown that in the past most of us had an Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio that was roughly 1 to 1. This meant that we ate about the same amount of Omega 3 as Omega 6 fats. But because we now eat much more processed foods and vegetable-based oils estimates are that the Omega 6 Omega 3 ratio has increased to somewhere around, depending on the estimate, from 10 to 1 to 30 to 1. We are now eating much more Omega 6 fats than we have ever done in the past.

Omega 6 essential fatty acids are equally important to our health however just as important is the Omega3 Omega 6 ratio, and over the past hundred years or so this is changed dramatically. By eating too much Omega 6 and too little Omega 3 we are all exposing ourselves to a wide range of health implications including the possibility of various cancers, coronary artery disease and a range of other inflammatory diseases such as arthritis.

Combine this with the fact that in the past most of our meat came from animals which were grass fed, and which therefore had a reasonable level of Omega3 fats, but most of our animals are now grain fed which reduces the levels of omega3 fats and increases the level of Omega 6 and you can see that there is no need at all for supplementation with 6.

Whilst both Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats are important to our health most of us are deficient in our intake of Omega 3 and have an Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio that is way too high, and we need to reduce our intake of Omega 6 fats. This can be done by reducing the amounts of processed foods in our diets and by changing our cooking oils from vegetable oils to good oils such as olive oil. And we all need to be increasing our intake of Omega 3 fatty acids with daily fish oil supplements.

It is important to understand however that not all fish oil supplements are as good as others, some having far more of the important fats than others, and you need to know how to compare the different fish oil supplements available to make an informed choice.

Do You Supplement With Fish Oil? Kids Also Should Have Fish Oil In Their Diet.

Science has understood the benefits of omega 3 essential fatty acids for some time and these benefits extend to the health of our children. Omega 3 fatty acids are as important in the diet of our children as it is in the diet of adults, and right from conception.

You find Omega 3 essential fatty acids in fish oil. Kids are just like adults. They have a minimum requirement for levels of omega 3 in their diet to ensure adequate development and health. The importance of omega 3 in children has now been underscored by the release of a study from the University of Wollongong's School Of Health Sciences in Australia. In this study it was found that Australian children were hugely deficient in omega 3. Children in the US will be no different.

In fact the study found that on average the intake of omega 3 fats in 3-year-olds was just 47 milligrams which the professor describes as "desperately low".

The 2 essential fatty acids that are commonly found in fish oil are DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). And it is well known that the levels of these essential fatty acids in adults in the US are way too low. This now applies to children. Omega 3 levels in our children are also way too low and there are a range of health implications from this.

The study noted that the demands of omega 3 in children starts at conception and that brain development during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy required a high level of DHA to be available. Equally brain development during the first 2 years of infancy also required adequate levels of Omega3 fats. Kids need omega 3 for adequate brain development and do not have enough.

Children cannot make their own decisions to supplement their diet with omega 3. Children have these decisions made by parents and parents need to understand that as well as increasing their own levels of intake of omega 3 essential fats the health of their children also depends on adequate levels of Omega3 fats right from conception.

And the development of a child's brain is not the only health issue negatively impacted by inadequate levels of omega 3. Kids have a wide range of health issues many of which can benefit from increasing their intake of fish oil. Kids with levels of omega 3 that are too low exhibit an increased risk of asthma, lower IQ as established on IQ tests, poor visual development, slower brain development and an increased risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to name a few.

Clearly there are important children's health issues at stake here. It is simple to increase the intake of omega 3 in children's diets. Of course it is always possible to increase their intake of fish however fish is very expensive, is generally contaminated with mercury and is not well liked by children.

I have been supplementing the diet of my children with omega 3 cost effectively and simply. I use the best Omega 3 capsules (which I take myself) and cut the top off and pour the fish oil onto their breakfast and they are unaware it is there.

Parents should be aware that the decisions they make about their children's diet affects their children's development. This includes establishing an adequate intake of essential fatty acids in their diet. Benefits of gastric sleeve surgery It is a less complicated procedure than gastric bypass as it does not require any reconnecting or rerouting of the small intestine. Gastric sleeve surgery does not need the implantation of any foreign or artificial device inside the body to facilitate weight loss. Patients lose about 40-60 % of their weight with 1 year of the surgery. It is entirely safe for patients with a BMI of over 60.Also patients having pre-existing medical conditions can safely undergo the surgery. There is no dumping syndrome associated with t he surgery. A Valuable Running Technique

I was-- years old, and I felt like I was about to collapse. I had just run a mile in less than 7 minutes, and I was thrilled. I wasn't ready to stop there, however.

Later that year, I ended up injuring my knee and I was never the same runner after that. I gave up on the sport pretty much thereafter, even though I was fully recovered within a year or so.

After a twelve year hiatus, I decided to give it another go. There was no good reason not to run anymore, and I've been trying to lose some weight. Anyway, seven minutes happened pretty easily for me. I guess I'm stronger now, and I wanted to try for six minutes from there.

After about ten attempts, I was forced into stopping early every time I tried to run the six minute mile. My body simply couldn't handle it and it almost felt like I was sprinting by the end.

I was determined to figure out a way to make it happen and I'm happy to say that I did. This is all because of something I did that it wouldn't have been possible without.

The biggest thing that made it happen was the fact that I started doing short runs at faster speeds. I would run a mile at a five minute pace, naturally stopping after two laps. This put me in a really good position to try for a 6 minute mile, which seemed easy in comparison.

Believe me, it's not much fun running two laps at such a fast pace. If you're serious about breaking that six minute mark though, you'll want to do this in order to get there.

Am I ready to stop at this point? Absolutely not, I'm shooting to shave another minute off of my time.

Huge Trapezius Muscles are Easy When You Know What To Do

How many times have you witnessed someone trying to do shrugs with an unreasonable amount of weight. I have seen guys trying to use 110lbs dumbbells in each hand. This doesn't seem effective and is quite frankly rediculous. There are many exercises that can work your "traps" or Trapezius muscles, other than extreme weight shrugs.

If you don't mind looking like a fitness model (which I agree isn't that bad), then don't worry about your traps. I happen to think they are what sets the body builder look apart from the body of a fitness model, among other things. No wonder people work so hard to get huge traps.

Your trapezius muscles sit on your shoulders and span from the edge of your shoulders all the way to your neck.

Traps are a muscle that separates the men from the boys. They can be an amazing sight, and can be downright scary, and sometimes just ridiculously big. Big traps can be the difference between you looking like a person that lifts weights and a person that doesn't. Big traps can be the difference in a fit guy looking like a fitness model, or a bodybuilder. Huge traps basically send a message, they are a statement. What are your traps saying?

Exercises for your Traps

Most people associate building big traps with "Shrugs." The shrug is a good exercise for trap development, but it's not the only one. The shrug has been around for years and is a staple for building traps just as the bench press is for the chest. I can't deny that the shrug hits the traps well, but I would like to assert to you that there are others moves that can be effective in developing the coveted traps. Below is an effective trap building routine that will deliver excellent results.

1. Shrugs 3 sets X 10 - 12 reps

I couldn't leave these out shrugs are the foundation of successful trap training. We all know how to do shrugs, but let me give you a few tips. If you are like me, your traps hit the side of your neck limiting the range of motion. If this is the case, perform the shrug and push your head forward. This gives your traps more room to contract and you don't feel like your head is going to pop off, this is definitely a good thing. Also, since there is such a small range of motion, make sure to contract (lift) fully and hold that position for 2 seconds, before slowly lowering the weight back to the starting position. I would also sit down to avoid cheating.

2. Lateral Raises, with Traps Flared 3 X 12 - 15

This can be a much harder move than the shrug. The first thing you want to do is flare your traps with the dumbbells in your hands. Next you will perform a lateral raise. This is just like a lateral raise done for shoulders, but with your traps flared, most of the pressure is put on your traps. You will want to start with 12 to 15 reps and not very much weight to maintain proper form and get used to the movement.

3. Bent over lateral raises, with Traps Flared 3X10-12

This is the same movement as the lateral raise, but you want to bend at the waist at about a 45 degree angle. This is great because it will hit the back of your traps. The rear traps are impressive because from behind you will look even more built, defined and strong.

These exercises will directly impact the growth of your traps. This addition to a workout can be incorporated into any workout split. For those doing a split, this would be a good addition to "shoulders day."

The Importance of an Effective Martial Arts Stretching Routine

If you want to become adept in martial arts, regardless of the style, you must possess the range of motion necessary to adequately master the techniques, and this requires flexibility. Becoming adept in the martial arts requires strength, concentration, and flexibility to achieve the necessary agile power.

Designing a well balanced martial arts stretching routine is essential to making rapid progress in any martial art. Create programs which combine light stretching workouts in the morning, light stretching in the evening with more intense main workouts during alternate days. This type of focused, intense martial arts stretching training is not easy. But it can increase your flexibility in one half to one quarter the time of a less aggressive program. When your body reaches a certain degree of flexibility, the schedule of the routine will seem easier.

The regimen of flexibility stretches that you follow in the mornings and evenings should consist of general exercises to keep your muscles loose and active stretching. Strenuous passive stretches, PNF, or isometric stretches have no place here. You do not want your stomach to be full when you are stretching, so your morning regimen of flexibility stretches should take place before eating breakfast. You want the blood flow to focus on the muscles you are stretching, not on digestive activity. You also want to make sure that your evening regimen takes place at least an hour after you have eaten dinner, but more than an hour before you go to bed. Your stretching regimens, both morning and evening, should be done six times per week and consist of no more than fifteen to thirty minutes of activity apiece.

Your intense main martial arts stretching workout should only be done 2-4 times a week. You do not want to do this workout more often than this because your body needs time to recover fully after each of these workouts. Make sure each of your intense workouts include a general warm-up. Your warm-up should consist of both cardiovascular elements and generic dynamic flexibility stretches. The intensity of these exercises need to be increased gradually so that your entire body gets loose and warm. After a general warm-up, you need to include a more specific warm-up. This warm-up needs to include movements that are similar to the movements of the particular martial art techniques you are trying to develop. Once you have completed both warm-ups, you need to move on to the main part of your martial arts stretching routine. This part needs to use modern stretching methods like isometric stretches, PNF stretches, and relaxed stretching techniques. Make sure that you end each of your intense stretching routines with a cool down period. During this time you should focus on static type flexibility stretches.

How often you do you main martial arts stretching workout, how long each workout is, and how much time you need to spend on each part of the workout (warm-up, main routine, and cool down) depends on how experienced you are and what your proficiency level is. If you are a beginner, you should have longer warm-up and cool down periods, accompanied by a shorter main routine. If you already have a fair level of flexibility, you can spend more time on the specific exercises and flexibility stretches in the main routine. If you have a high level of flexibility, you are able to have a shorter workout all together. Your main focus is to maintain your level of flexibility. The type of flexibility exercises you want to have in your program will depend on your experience level and the type of sport or martial art you are practicing for.

Students who are new to the martial arts need to focus on flexibility stretches that are non-specific. Students who are classified as advanced or intermediate should focus on techniques, such as, relaxed stretching, PNF, and isometric stretching, which are more advanced and concentrate on the groups of muscles needed for their particular art.

Martial arts that utilize high kicks require more of a focus on stretching that addresses the legs and hips, where grappling practitioners need to improve the flexibility of their upper body and torso.

By designing your martial arts stretching routing according to your experience level and your sport or art and keeping to your planned schedule, you will reach your flexibility goals faster than you would have thought.

Ka-CHING! Hear that? No it's not the sound of overflowing cash registers as consumers throw endless wads of euros at scientifically-backed, healthy foods in greater numbers than ever before.

Rather, it's the metallic snap of padlocks chaining the doors of food research laboratories across western Europe. No need for them any more.

Maybe they can be sold to the pharma industry - they may well need them as there'll probably be a huge increase in demand for drugs now that a vast majority of nutrient and health relationships have turned out to be bogus. Zut!

Say what you like about the European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) scientific methods - misguided, methodical, harsh, not-harsh-enough, unfathomable - but their effects are being felt right here, right now in the EU's 27-member states. And that means reduced spending on supposedly healthy foods. Not to mention drastically reduced innovation.

The first opinions were written into the Official Journal of the European Union on October 21 and were followed up by another batch a week or so later. Negative opinions for the likes of omega-3s, probiotics, herbs and more are now law. In theory, local authorities will be able to prosecute companies breaching these laws in six months.

At least two companies: Red Bull (in regard to taurine) and Efamol (omega-3 supplements), have said they will not change their marketing because of negative opinions so it will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Of course positive opinions for the likes of plant sterols/stanols, vitamin D and calcium were also written into the register.

Time to see a (economic) shrink

In addition to the first opinions becoming law in October, the month kicked off with EFSA rejecting 70 per cent of 523 article-.1 generic health claims. Bummer. For industry, October has been the cruellest month. And so to the effects.

What we are talking is reduced spending on research and development; on marketing; reduced spending by consumers. It means a smaller healthy foods industry in Europe; investments in other lands; the best minds of a nutrition research generation, lost.

We are talking billions of euros sucked from the economies of the EU.

Don't believe me? Ask Barry Callebaut. Ask GAT Food Essentials. Ask Ocean Spray, Brudy Technology, Valio. Ask Clasado, Merck and Martek Biosciences. Ask Beneo-Orafti and DSM Nutritional Products. Ask Danone, Yakult, Danisco, Chr Hansen, Indena, Bio Serae, Naturex, Frutarom, Solbar, Lycored, Lallemand, Ingredia...I could go on...all have been affected by EFSA's negative opinions.

These companies are trying to put a positive spin on events, talking about the process as a "learning experience" and the like, but the fact is concern at the situation has moved into overdrive. Concern has become EXTREME ANXIETY.

You only have to see a 17-page document like the one issued by three prominent EU-wide trade groups last week to see that.

For many years these companies and others, along with the trade associations they are members of, have been playing devil's advocate, warning Europe's 500 million citizens of the economic catastrophe that awaits if companies are unable to make health claims.

Well, those fears have become reality. They are not arriving, still something unformed on the horizon, some distant blip that may become threatening at some indiscriminate point in the future. They have filled the horizon, to some, looming spectre-like.

Time to come clean

Fair enough, I hear you say. There's been about enough of this wool-pulling-over-the-eyes going on. It's time these deceitful evil-doers were put to the sword or rational science - that was one of the aims of the regulation after all. If the science isn't there, the science isn't there.

For the sceptical it's 'told-you-so' time. Big Food has for too long been peddling countless forms of voodoo nutrition so it can lift billions of euros from the innocent, ill-informed pockets of 500 million gullible western European consumers (hell let's include the kids too - health claims are for everybody!).

It's a righteous thing that EFSA has ridden into health claims town on a big, shiny scientific horse of uber-logic carrying a huge health claims bashing, anti-fun jousting stick? Party's over folks.

Oh no - not EFSA scientists! Boooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!! Quick close the door - maybe they'll go away.

Of course they don't go away. And they won't go away. That's why the talk of a legal challenge grows. Maybe this thing has got so convoluted only a high court of the land can sort it out and rethink the burdens of proof.

For now at least, as T.S. Eliot wrote in his early 20th century poem, "The Wasteland", (which, as a common hack, I am near-obligated to reference since I have included the word 'wasteland' in my headline), it really is, "Ta ta. Goonight. Goonight" for hundreds and potentially thousands of health claims in Europe and all the investment that goes on around them.

For example, 20 pounds could be enough for you (if you are a rookie); some weeks later you'll surely want to move on to the next weight on the rack.

Everyone knows that Mexican food is different and that Mexican food recipes are definitely not the same as American recipes. Unlike Canada, which has a culinary tradition which is quite similar to our own, America's neighbor to the south has a radically different way of cooking, with many recipes and ingredients which are unfamiliar to the American palate - but what is it that has caused such a divergence in the cuisines of the two neighboring nations?

Historical Factors

There is a historical reason for the difference, which is in large part responsible for this difference. As everyone knows, Mexico was formerly a Spanish colony until winning their independence. However, as you probably also know, parts of the United States were also once Spanish territories! As it happens though, these regions (largely in the southwest) do bear a distinct influence from the Spanish colonial period, though not to the extent seen in Mexico since they have long been part of the US.

Most of the US was instead colonized by settlers from northern Europe, with cuisines, which differed greatly from Spanish cooking. These immigrants had a much greater influence on the culinary scene in the fledgling nation, accounting for much of the difference in Mexican recipes and those having their origin in points north.

European settlers arriving in Mexico came largely from Spain for a long time, having a much larger influence on the diet of the country than any single immigrant group in the United States ever did. In fact, many traditional Mexican recipes are directly from Spain or are adaptations of Spanish classics using local ingredients where the ingredients used in Europe were unavailable locally. The predominant influence of this one cuisine led to a mixture of Spanish and native cuisines, which evolved into what, we now know as Mexican food.

Mexico has also seen a large number of immigrants arrive from the Levant (especially Syria and Lebanon), adding a few dishes which are now classic Mexican food recipes in their own right such as al pastor. This dish is essentially a Mexican take on the middle eastern shawarma.

The US has had a much more diverse population historically, meaning that American cuisine is more of a patchwork quilt of different influences and ingredients, which is characterized by constant change. By contrast, Mexico has been able to develop its own style of cooking; but Mexican cooks do of course adapt the foods of other countries to local tastes as well as enjoying them as they are.

Different Ingredients

The second reason for the difference between Mexican and American cooking has to do with geography. Just as the first European colonists in America learned to use the local produce as well as importing their own, early settlers in Mexico adapted to local ingredients and the native and Spanish cuisines melded into something all its own. Since the country has a warmer climate, different ingredients are easily available, with corn, chili peppers, pumpkins, and other crops, which have been cultivated there for millennia and imported crops, which grow easily in the country.

It is this adaptation of European recipes to the ingredients of the new world and the incorporation of Spanish ingredients and techniques into the indigenous cuisine that has made Mexican food the unique cuisine it is today. From Mexican food recipes like pozole to Mexican casserole recipes, tostadas to pumpkin recipes, Mexican food is one of the world's greatest fusion cuisines that no one thinks of as a fusion cuisine.

Finally pick any two days and eat 500 calories less on those days.

After the four weeks, return to your regular diet for the next two weeks. Afterwards, repeat the whole procedure all over again. As you go along, you'll realize that you can break your weight plateau and keep losing weight without really starving.

Calorie shifting works a lot better when you know the right kinds of calories to take in. You'll want to avoid sodas and junk food as much as you can, since most of the calories you get from these are empty -- they may sabotage your efforts.

When you begin your calorie shifting diet, you may not want to consume more calories, it may not make sense to you, but you do have to consume more calories with the plan, in order to shift your metabolism and get it working again. That doesn't mean adding empty calories to your diet. You should always eat healthy alternatives to high-calories snacks and high-fat snacks. If you follow one of the many calorie shifting diets available, you'll end up losing more weight than you would simply following your 2,000 calorie diet, and you'll lose the weight quicker. It really works, and you don't have to starve yourself to lose the weight you want to lose.
